This new year 2009, the annual Ball Drop ceremony will again be seen on New York Times Square, and apparently many other places in the US will be carrying over this tradition and will be conducting their own ball drop. This is one of the most watched events of the New Year, and will be broadcasted live by TV stations CBS (The Late Show with David Letterman), FOX (Guy Lombardo) NBC (New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly and The Tonight’s Show with Jay Leno and Johnny Carson) and ABC(Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, co-hosted by Ryan Seacrest). I’m pretty sure a lot of people will try to stream the ball drop online as well, and I will try to watch it on the Internet myself.
This year, the ball will be powered not by incandescent bulbs but by ESL or Energy Saving Lamps. I think this is a good move for the organizers. I’m pretty sure President-elect Barrack Obama will be there at New York Times Square to watch it personally. The big billboard will assist the Ball Drop in the Countdown for 2009.
Here’s Times Square 2008’s ball drop from Youtube.

From Wiki, here are some facts about the annual Ball Drop:
Each year on New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square in Manhattan, New York City, a time ball made of crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of a pole on the One Times Square building and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year. The Ball descends 77 feet (23 meters) over the course of a minute, coming to rest at the bottom of its pole at 12:00am. Toshiba’s Times Square billboard directly below the Ball counts down to midnight as well.
Every year up to one million people gather in Times Square to watch the Ball drop, and an estimated 1 billion watch video of the event, 100 million of them in the United States.
Pictures and video of the event to follow with the countdown. Sacramento will also be having their own version of this event.
