I woke up this morning to find out that all of my sites, embedded with the free tracking code from Sitemeter, are inaccessible due to an “operation aborted” error in Internet Explorer. I immediately investigated and the problem is indeed with Sitemeter. It’s usually the last thing that loads on my code heirarchy and when Explorer (IE7) does load it, the page goes blank and a window with “operation aborted” error appears. Just as immediately as I noticed, and after seeing that my Adsense earnings is terribly affected, I decided to remove all the sitemeter codes on my websites. It was a very drastic thing to do, but the only way I know will remove the error. As expected, without the sitemeter codes, site display went back to normal.
After almost 8 hours, I finally found what’s wrong with Sitemeter. It seems the free tracker company suddenly changed their script, and they forgot about a bug in IE7 regarding launching scripts in tables. Of course the best thing to do at this point is to remove the codes completely, but Luboš Motl
Pilsen found a way to remove the script from the codes and still make it work. If you want to know the modified codes, go over to his blog. Me, I’d rather wait ’til Sitemeter fixes this issue before posting the codes again on my site.
