Finally, Rafael Nadal of Spain was able to beat all odds and take the trophy away from consecutive 5-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in a tennis game that lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes, the longest ever in men’s finals history. Nadal, or Rafa as he is fondly called, showed his power all throughout the match with amazing topspins.

In winning the Wimbledon 2008, Nadal broke several records, and stopped some of them dead in their tracks. He became the first man to win the French Open and the Wimbledon in the same year after Bjorn Borg did it in 1980. He also stopped a losing skid against Federer after losing to him in the last two Wimbledon Finals. Rafa ended Roger’s winning streak of forty matches in Wimbledon and 65 in grass, and of course, he stopped Federer from getting that 6th consecutive trophy, which would have tied Roger with the record.

The score was 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7. Nadal got the first two set in easy fashion, but Federer fought back and everything thereafter made McEnroe, another tennis great who was watching them play, that this final is the “greatest match I’ve ever seen.” Many are astounded with the results and expected Roger to win it, but I think Rafael really deserved the trophy.

Here is the video of the start of the match.

And here’s the winning video and some highlights, with Nadal as the result winner.
