What is Backlash? Here’s the stored info from wiki:

Backlash is an annual professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment, which started in 1999 and is held normally in April (with the exception of 2005). From 2004 to 2006, the event was exclusive to the RAW brand.

The 2007 event was the first PPV since 2002 (other than the “Big Four” PPV events) to feature all three brands (RAW, Smackdown! and ECW) after WWE stopped doing brand-exclusive events.

Backlash often features rematches from WrestleMania, or matches based on events that took place at WrestleMania, hence the name.

Here’s the WWE Backlash vedio trailer.

“Fro every victory, a celebration. For every defeat, a backlash.” Pretty apt title, right?

Particularly, Backlash 2008 is exciting for me because of the match between Edge and Undertaker, a wrestler I thought was dead and coffinized a long time ago. I first saw the broadcast match while watching the NBA Playoffs, and I was really intrigued to see the Undertaker, not having followed WWE for quite some time now.

Here’s a complete background of Backlash 2008 on wiki.

The main feud heading into Backlash on the SmackDown brand is between The Undertaker and Edge, with the two feuding over the World Heavyweight Championship. In February, at No Way Out, The Undertaker won an Elimination Chamber match to become the number one contender to the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXIV.[4] At WrestleMania, Undertaker defeated Edge to win the World Heavyweight Championship and extend his WrestleMania undefeated streak to 16-0.[5] On the April 4, 2008 edition of SmackDown, SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero booked a WrestleMania rematch between Undertaker and Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship at Backlash.[6] However, on the April 18th edition of SmackDown!, Guerrero announced a WrestleMania 23 rematch between The Undertaker and Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship, with the winner facing Edge at Backlash. [7]

For the Raw brand’s main event, Raw General Manager William Regal announced he was putting together the Raw main event on the April 7, 2008 edition. It would involve John “Bradshaw” Layfield challenging WWE Champion Randy Orton. Moments later, Triple H arrived and said that given the dubious way Orton stole victory at WrestleMania that it was unclear if he would have won had he not been such an opportunist. Given that, he proposed he insert himself into the championship match, to which Regal agreed so long as he defeated JBL and Orton in a handicap match later that night. Triple H did win the match and Regal announced the change to the match (now calling it a Triple Threat match) but just then John Cena made his way down and said he was entitled to a title rematch using the same reasons Triple H offered. Regal again conceded that it was viable and that Cena would be given his rematch so long as he completed a similar challenge in the main event (this time defeating Triple H and JBL). The match eventually disintegrated when the two partners (along with Randy Orton, who had come to ringside) began brawling and allowed Cena to pick up the victory. As a result, the match was once again changed; this time to a Fatal Four Way to decide the WWE Champion. On the April 21 edition of Raw, Jim Ross announced the match was being modified to be an elimination match instead of a single fall.

The primary feud on the ECW brand is between Chavo Guerrero and Kane, with the two battling over the ECW Championship. Before WrestleMania XXIV aired live on pay-per-view, Kane won a 24-Man Battle Royal to earn an ECW Championship match against Chavo Guerrero later that night.[8] Kane would go on to defeat Guerrero and become the new ECW Champion.[8] On the April 4, 2008 edition of SmackDown, SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero booked Kane to defend the ECW Championship against Chavo Guerrero at Backlash.[6]

Another feud leading up to Backlash is between Shawn Michaels and Batista. Upset over the retirement of Ric Flair at the hands of Michaels at WrestleMania XXIV, Batista interrupted Michaels’ address on the April 4, 2008 edition of SmackDown! and called him a “selfish” person for what he did at WrestleMania. Batista blamed Michaels for not laying down for Flair and thus protecting his career instead of retiring him. Michaels defended his actions by saying Flair had called upon him to bring his best to WrestleMania, which he did. The conflict continued on an edition of Chris Jericho’s “Highlight Reel” interview segment that featured both men on the April 7, 2008 edition of Raw. Following another tense verbal standoff, Batista left the ring saying he had something in store for Michaels. Moments later, Raw General Manager William Regal said he had confirmed a match with SmackDown! General Manager Vickie Guerrero between Michaels and Batista at Backlash. In addition, the following week Jericho had a confrontation with Shawn Michaels who ended up kicking Jericho in the face. Frustrated, Jericho went to Regal in an effort to possibly add himself to the match. Regal did indeed add Jericho to the match, not as a competitor, but as a Special Guest Referee.

The official theme song is “All Summer Long” courtesy of Kid Rock. Lyrics below.

It was 1989, my thoughts were short my hair was long
Caught somewhere between a boy and man
She was seventeen and she was far from in-between
It was summertime in Northern Michigan
Ahh Ahh Ahh
Ahh Ahh Ahh

Splashing through the sand bar
Talking by the campfire
It’s the simple things in life, like when and where
We didn’t have no internet
But man I never will forget
The way the moonlight shined upon her hair

[Chorus:]
And we were trying different things
We were smoking funny things
Making love out by the lake to our favorite song
Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking ’bout tomorrow
Singing Sweet home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet home Alabama all summer long

Catching Walleye from the dock
Watching the waves roll off the rocks
She’ll forever hold a spot inside my soul
We’d blister in the sun
We couldn’t wait for night to come
To hit that sand and play some rock and roll

While we were trying different things
And we were smoking funny things
Making love out by the lake to our favorite song
Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking ’bout tomorrow
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long

Now nothing seems as strange as when the leaves began to change
Or how we thought those days would never end
Sometimes I’ll hear that song and I’ll start to sing along
And think man I’d love to see that girl again

[Repeat Chorus x2]

Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
