MissingMoney.com is a website which claims they can help you recover your lost/unclaimed money from a state that you live in, including(but not limited to) the following monetary accounts:

  1. Bank accounts and safe deposit box contents
  2. Stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and dividends
  3. Uncashed checks and wages
  4. Insurance policies, CD’s, trust funds
  5. Utility deposits, escrow accounts

They say that real estate properties are not included in their comprehensive search. The search is free but the service itself of recovery is not.

A folk back at Yahoo Answers! asks if this scheme is a scam, because upon using the Search Function on the website, he finds out that there is a sizable amount of money in his name. A friend told him there that

those websites get their information from free state sponsored websites. All you have to do is find the website for the controller in state that you live (or any state that you have lived in that may have unclaimed money)and you can search your name. Any monies that you have that are unclaimed for $25.00 or more must be reported to the state and they keep records. For example, in California, the site I would use is www.sco.ca.gov

I am not endorsing missingmoney so I am not putting a link to them here. Who has used the service and actually found their missing money? Do you think this is really a scam?
